Significance of Effective Communication

As we know , university is a society in miniature , the communication skills is a singnificance role in various social settings,  so, it is very useful for us to take the course and practice different communication skills.

For example, I'm a exchang students.  As you know,I am a stranger in this place.so, the skill and the courage to communicate in a  different culture become a key determinant of my quickness adaptation in the new circumstances. As a matter fact, effective communication is not restricted to language. More specifically, one should be confident during communication and the use of various suitable gestures can also have perfect effects.

In fact, I realize those skills are pivotal in the workplace and in my university with classmates and professors,  Last semester, I did my internship in the China Mobile. In fact, it is my first-time that I truly dig into the professional world. I would be hard-pressed to imagine that without effective communication skills how I can finish my task during the six months. It is a nice experience for me and the communication with the boss can eliminate plenty of misunderstands and enhance the efficiency.  What’s more, the communication in the leisure time like playing football , drinking coffee together,   celebrating one’s birthday or simply chatting during lunch can exert really beneficial influence on the relationships between colleagues.

effective communication skills are really keys for success and the command of those skills are surly important for one’s life.

  2. Hi Chen Si!

Welcome to Singapore! :) I hope you are enjoying ur SEP in NUS and the experience of meeting lots of new friends here! I believe that you are a very outgoing and active person as it really needs one to be courageous to take up this module (a communication- and assignment-based one). What more if you are an exchange student!

I do agree with you that language might affect communication, but it should not be a factor that inhibit or stop you from interacting with people in a language that you are not proficient in. We might not be very good at a language, but we could always improve ourselves by practicing or taking up a language course (like ES2007S)!

Also, you are right to have mentioned that effective communication plays a vital role especially at workplace/school. Knowledge is certainly a very essential factor in helping us to solve problems and enhance our performance in our jobs.On top of that, I always feel that effective communication is a determining factor of whether someone could be influential in his job or personal life.

Looking forward to reading your next blog!

  3. Hey Chen Si,

Welcome to Singapore too! I hope you have no problems settling down! I realised that you had mentioned some points regarding communication that I have been overlooking all along. For instance, you mentioned that communication is not restricted to language and that non verbal communication plays a part too. Before taking ES2007S, I have always seen language as the main component of communication. If one is strong in language, he/she will be able to communicate well but now I realised it is not the case. Non verbal language also plays a significant role in enhancing his/her communication process.

I also agree with you that communication during one's leisure time is a good way to foster closer bonds between individuals. The use of effective communication should not be restricted to just the workplace but instead extended to our very own social circles.

  4. Hi Chen Si,

Thank you for sharing about the importance of communication skills during your internship! I agree with you that it is truly important to be able to communicate effectively as well as efficiently with your superiors at work.

I understand that being an exchange student, you might face some difficulties in understanding the Singaporean accent or even Singlish that we so often use to communicate with each other. If you do face such difficulties, please feel free to clarify. I am sure that everyone of us will be happy to explain to you.

By the way, I've noticed that you have made a few spelling mistakes, may I suggest that you could probably try typing the post out in Microsoft Word first to check for any edits before posting?

Hope you'll have an enjoyable semester in NUS! =)

  5. Hello Chen Si,

Hope you are enjoying your life in NUS so far! You are right about being courageous to quickly adapt to a new environment. And I also see that you are taking a step forward by signing up for this module and practicing your communication skills. I believe you can adapt to Singapore quickly!

We are all in the process of learning. For me, English is my second language and sometimes I do not feel too comfortable as well using English as the medium of conversation for a long time. I think this module will help me in this aspect as we need to speak up frequently, which is not so common in my Life Science courses.

Let's learn and improve together! =D
